President's Monthly Chapter Message

Louisiana Engineering Society – New Orleans Chapter

May 19, 2021 – Meeting Info

Our next NO-LES meeting will be on May 19, 2021 and titled “The Impact of Increased Renewable Electric Generation on the Power Grid, with a Sub-Topic: Black-starting Generation in Lake Charles After Hurricane Laura”. The presentation will be given by Mike McAnelly, P.E., the President of Power & Control Systems-2000 (PCS2000). Mr. McAnelly will cover some of the fundamentals of frequency governor response and voltage regulation and compare traditional to renewable generation technologies and the impact on the grid.  Time permitting, he will give us and update on how PCS2000 assisted black starting a power plant in Lake Charles after Hurricane Laura.

This will be a joint meeting with the New Orleans Section of IEEE. See http://sites.ieee.org/neworleans/. (1) PDH will be earned for all in attendance.  The buffet dinner will be at Southport Hall in Jefferson, La. We will have appropriate social distancing in the hall and masked and gloved food servers.  There will be a cash bar and after party with music for those who want to hang out and network after Mr. McAnelly’s presentation.  If you like bring your better half or a date and dance the night away! For more information on registration for this meeting, click here.   Please register as soon as possible! Online registration will be available until 5pm the day before.  Our sponsors are welcome to come and setup tables in the hall area for the networking and after party.

We will also be presenting our 2021 scholarship recipients. The four local students were awarded these scholarships for demonstrating achievement and the ability to balance the pressures of school and life.

Our April 2021 chapter meeting included a very interesting ethics topic presented by Mr. Gene Joanen titled “Ethics is Baked in the Process”. Gene is an Environmental Scientist, Toxicologist, and Risk Assessment Leader and is CEO of the local firm Balance Consulting.  He discussed aspects of environmental compliance, hidden liabilities, and the significance of ethics in this field.
